少年从师中岛来章。并接触到很多中国宋元绘画名迹，追摹临池不废，并成为圆山派的重要画家之1 。后来曾染指油画，且独具天赋地将两者融合1 处。1877年办画塾培养弟子，1909年创办川端画学校，自任校长，并为东京美术学校教授，帝室技艺员，文部省美术展审查员、古社寺保存会委员，日本美术协会特别会员。作品多次参加各种美术展览，代表作品有《太极殿》、《桃源图》、《墨堤春晓图》、《樱花鸡图》等。这位出色 的美术教育家门下，出现了平福百穗、结城素明、山田敬中、田中赖璋、尾竹竹坡、岛崎柳坞等1 流的名画家。
